If you listen very carefully you can still hear the sobs of someone over in Microsoft’s Seattle headquarters crying to themselves about this, but it’s true. All of those people who were saying “it’s just a timed exclusive” either had some secret knowledge or just got lucky, but either way, they were right. Today, Bethesda Softworks announced that the Fallout 3 DLC would be coming to the last remaining HD console, the PS3. Not only that but they also announced two new downloadable expansions to hit later in the year. You know the deal, more details after the break.
Up until now the three pieces of DLC, Operation Anchorage, the Pitt and Broken Steel, have been exclusive to the Xbox 360 and Windows PCs but that is going to change. Starting sometime in June the previously exclusive Fallout 3 DLC will be hitting the PS3. The DLC, which will be identical to the Xbox 360/PC DLC, will be hitting in four to six week spans. According to Todd Howard, Fallout 3 game director, the reason behind the timed exclusivity was actually time and uncertainty. Howard told IGN that they weren’t certain if they’d release the DLC on PS3 but due to the overwhelming demand for the expansions they decided to release it. As far as why they’re releasing it so late, the answer is simple, workload. It takes a lot of work to release them on a new platform (I’m trying to avoid the word “port” since that’s always seen as a bad thing).
Also announced today was that there would be two new bits of DLC coming very soon. They’ll hit the Xbox 360 and PC first, this June, and then arrive on the PS3 this Fall following the others. Point Lookout will take place at Point Lookout, Maryland where the bombs haven’t hit but the rest of the world has left it behind. It’s being described as a large swamp with new technologies, main quests and side quests.
The second, and most likely final, edition of DLC will be Mothership Zeta. Remember that crashed space ship that you can find it the wasteland? Well, it’s not alone. The Mothership is back, and it’s pissed off. This expansion features an environment so different from anything else in the rest of Fallout 3 the head artist is actually heading this up. It’s described as an old time abduction scenario.
And the final thing that was announced was the all pieces of DLC would soon be available in disc form. However, those discs are not on the PS3 so I will not be going into detail about them. However, I will say that if a PS3 owner wants to get a hold of these add-ons and doesn’t have the internet connection necessary look out for a Game of the Year edition at the end of the year which will include all of the DLC (and will be on the PS3).
