As I’m sure you are all aware, Sony have a “Big PS3 Announcement” on Tuesday and as you might have guessed, its beginning to generate some hype which many people debating what it could be. We have come up with a few idea’s on what they might be about to announce.
PS3 Slim and Lite
Too early for a smaller version of the PS3 you say. A couple of years back Sony confirmed that they would be working on a smaller version of the PS3 like they have done with the PlayStation and PS2 before, so you can’t rule it out. Add to the fact that the chip sets in the Ps3 are getting smaller making this a more realistic idea. The reason why i don’t think this will be the announcement is that the PS3 price point is too high, when this happened with the PlayStation and PS2 the price of the console was around the £100-120 mark.
PS3 Price Cut
This is the one everyone and their dog seems to be waiting for. Could Sony now be ready to lower the price of the PlayStation 3. We actually think this announcement is very likely seeing as giving the timing, Sony could be lowering the price at the start of the new Financial year and to add more weight to this possibility the rumors recently have had more backing behind them and the cost to develop the PS3 has been reduced.
New Firmware
Could Sony be about to announce a new firmware update which will make large improvements to PSN or bigger yet, are Sony going to release a Firmware update which allows for PS2 B/C in all PS3 models. Again we think this one is possible and while it may not be a Ps2 B/C update, don’t be surprised to see the announcement involving a firmware update.
Final Fantasy VII Remake finally confirmed
Now this one really is a long shot, but you never know. If it was to be remade Sony would make a very big deal out of it however i think this announcement would be saved for E3.

The update is a ‘Sony’ announcement, not a PS3 announcement. So far, the speculation indicates a PS2 price drop, but who knows?

The only way it is a firmware update is if it contains the very top items for which the community has asked. B/C, Voice Messaging, Voice Chat. Otherwise Sony wouldn’t bother making such a big deal out of it with Warning emails.
Another possibility is some sort of exclusivity deal. And by exclusivity I mean exclusivity on a known IP. This exclusivity could come in two forms. Total exclusivity for a known entity – MGS5 or Grand Theft Auto 5 for example.
It could also come in the form of partial exclusivity. This has two forms. An example of this might be timed exclusivity – the PS3 gets 6 months exclusive on Assassin’s Creed 2.
Or the PS3 could see a partial exclusivity with content – exclusive DLC for Modern Warfare 2 or even Grand Theft Auto 4.
The final possibility is the Sony doorbuster. Sony has secured multiplatform status of a heretofore 360 exclusive. Most likely candidate is Mass Effect. There is another likely title but people are not ready to accept that yet and no it isn’t a Bungie product.

I think the price drop is the strongest possibility. I’m not sure, but i doubt Sony announces games, they leave that too certain magazines and sites. They do announce exclusive and mulitplatform deals.

Price cut would be the best move b/c I think that would start them on the road to gaining 2nd place for this generation. If that price goes down to $300, the PS3 will consistently outsell the 360 for quite some time.

According to my sources at Sony Ireland, Sony are to make a press release today Monday 30th march with regards to firmware Version 2.70 which will hit your consoles on April 2nd.

ok guys listen up. i dont understand why people are saying that B/C might be added or it will cool if it is added on the next firmware. first of all, y did sony remove B/C? to lower costs. for B/C to work, you either need a graphic synthesizer or a emotion engine (or both) to be able to play ps2 games on your ps3. Now i dont think a firmware update will add these things because….i dont know…….they are all hardware modifications!!! if u want B/C on a ps3 with no B/C, your best chances are to go to sony or a ps3 modder and get the hardware requirments onto your ps3 as an extra add on. Im only trying to clear the fact that ps2 B/C is not possible via a firmware update. thanks for reading.
N.B. those hardware requirements are not needed for ps1 B/C but only for ps2 B/C.

This is wrong. All that is required is an emulation environment to run PS2 software. The PS3 is so much more powerful than the PS2, it would be absolutely no problem for the PS3 to emulate all of these systems using purely software.
Still I think this has nothing to do with the announcement.

I really want them to remake FFVII. I’m addicted to Crisis Core and love it, but I try playing VII and fail. It’s very difficult for me to see or read anything on it, and am dying for a remake.
I doubt they will, though. Most likely it will be a slimmer version or price drop.

@DanFry: fine i have to agree to one aspect of your argument. yes you can play ps2 games on your ps3 without the emotion engine and graphics synthesizer, but only about 50% to 70% of the games. this is said in the article http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/multimedia/display/20070226073502.html
the emotion engine and the graphics synthesizer allows the ps3 system to play 98% of the ps2 games. so even if does B/C comes back, we wont be able to play 100% of the games….mostly about 50% of the games. overall that is still cool coz i’d love to play my ps2 games on my ps3.

The way they worded it, it’s probably hardware, not a game. Who knows with SONY? Maybe it’s Netflix on PS3, maybe it’s backwards compatibility, but it’s most likely either a price change of some sort for PS2 or MAYBE it’s the next version of the PSP, in competition with the DSi.
